99.5 More Years

The World Economic Forum released a new report on the global gender gap this week, which estimates that gender parity is not expected to be achieved for approximately 99.5 more years. While gender equality may not be imminent, the nearly 400-page report contains valuable data and identifies important opportunities for growth for women.  Among them is the role of women in "frontier" positions, which include cloud computing, data and AI,  engineering, and product development. Women are severely underrepresented in these career paths—in cloud computing, for example, it is estimated that men comprise 88% of the workforce. By pursuing careers in these areas, women can carve out a place for themselves on the front lines of the global economy and begin transitioning out of roles at risk of being automated.

The full report from the World Economic Forum is available here: http://www3.weforum.org/docs/WEF_GGGR_2020.pdf

In only two of the eight categories of jobs (people and culture and content production) did women make up a majority of the workforce. In the other six—marketing, sales, production development, data and A.I., engineering, and cloud computing—female workers were in the minority.
