Taylor Swift and Big Machine Label Group are never, ever, ever getting back together. Popstar and songwriter Taylor Swift tweeted an update to her fans last week, alleging that Big Machine Label Group is seeking to prevent her from performing her older hits and including them in her upcoming Netflix documentary. Now Swift is calling upon The Carlyle Group to enter the fray and assist her in recovering the rights to her older songs. The D.C.-based private equity firm helped to finance the Ithaca Holdings acquisition of Big Machine Label Group in June 2019. Time will tell if The Carlyle Group will get dragged into the dispute or if it will be able to shake it off.
On Thursday, the pop icon called on The Carlyle Group to help her win back the rights to her early songs that she lost when her former record label, Scott Borchetta's Big Machine Label Group, was acquired by Carlyle-backed Ithaca Holdings for a reported $300 million on June 30. Carlyle has owned a minority stake in Ithaca since 2017.
